Sons and Lovers is a romance novel by D. H. Lawrence. Summary of the Book Gertrude and Walter Morel’s marriage is falling apart. Walter is an uneducated man, prone to violence and fits of temper. Gertrude tries to focus on her children, especially her sons, William and Paul. She hopes to make them avoid their father’s fate, and to keep them away from the coal mines. Yet, Paul constantly seeks to escape his mother’s overprotective gaze and resorts to the embraces of women his own age. Strongly autobiographical and far too sensuous for its time, this is a powerful novel of childhood, adolescence and the disagreement between generations. About D. H. Lawrence David Herbert Lawrence was an English novelist, poet, essayist, painter, literary critic and playwright. He is remembered for his books Women in Love, The Rainbow and Lady Chatterley's Lover. Sons and Lovers was adapted into a hit film in 1960 starring Trevor Howard, Dean Stockwell and Wendy Hiller. The movie won Academy Awards for Best Cinematography, Black-and-White and was nominated for Best Picture, Best Actor in a Leading Role, Best Actress in a Supporting Role, Best Director, Best Writing, Screenplay Based on Material from Another Medium, and Best Art Direction-Set Decoration, Black-and-White.
