This text provides the reader with enough information on a variety ofsubjects to know where to proceed without assistance and when it would be wise to seek additional professional assistance. Since the early l970s, a new breed of specialists has emerged—the sport manager. Sport management isnow recognized as a legitimate field of study in colleges and universitiesworldwide. In its broadest sense, sport, sport programs, and sportmanagement are terms used to encompass other terms such as activitybased programs, fitness programs, recreation programs or club management, fitness management, and recreation management. Therefore, throughout this text the umbrella term will be sport management. Settingsfor the management of fitness, recreation, and sport activities fall into five primary clusters, each of which contains two or more categories that havesimilar objectives and provide similar services, but occur in differentsettings and/or serve different clientele.
