The Balkand begins with the story of the creation of the universe and the birth of the gods. It then tells the story of the birth of Ravana, the demon king who will eventually be Rama's nemesis.The Balkand then focuses on the life of Rama's father, King Dasharatha of Ayodhya. Dasharatha has three wives and four sons: Rama, Bharata, Lakshmana, and Shatrughna. Rama is the eldest son and heir to the throne.
