Kaliya ?????, in Hindu traditions, was a poisonous N?ga living in the Yamun? river, in V?nd?vana. The water of the Yamun? for four leagues all around him boiled and bubbled with poison. No bird or beast could go near, and only one solitary Kadamba tree grew on the river bank. The celebration of N?ga Nathaiy? or N?ga N?itya is associated with the tale of Lord Krishna dancing upon and subduing K?liya. The story of Krishna and K?liya is told in Chapter Sixteen of the Tenth Canto of the Bhagavata Purana. The proper home of K?liya was the island of Rama?aka, but he had been driven away from there in fear of Garu?a, the foe of all serpents. Garu?a had been cursed by the yogi Saubhari dwelling at Vrindavan so that he could not come to Vrindavan without meeting his death. Therefore, K?liya chose Vrindavan as his residence, knowing it was the only place where Garu?a could not come. Once, the sage Durvas? came as a guest and was served by R?dh?. After this episode, R?dh? took a walk across river Yamun? and became terrified upon seeing the giant serpent. She fled to Vrindavan where she informed the people that she had seen a giant serpent in river. Lord Krishna was very angry upon hearing this and wanted to teach a lesson to K?liya as he had troubled his R?dh?. He went to the river Yamun? searching for K?liya, who upon seeing Krishna, coiled around Krishna's legs and constricted him. The Gokul people came to see that Krishna was in the river. Ya?od? was afraid of the snake and ordered Krishna to return at once. Meanwhile, K?liya attempted to escape, but Krishna stomped on his tail, and warned him to not trouble anyone again before returning to the people. The next day, Krishna was playing a ball game across the Yamuna with R?dha and friends. After the ball fell into the Yamun?, R?dh? tried to retrieve it, but Krishna stopped her and offered to do so.
