A prodigious student from an early age, he studied Sanskrit at college and won the Bhau Daii Sanskrit Prize at the B. A. examination and the Bhagawandas Scholarship at the M. A. examination while he studied at the Deccan College. He founded the New English School in 1880, and was invested with the office of Superintendent. A staunch secularist, Apte fought against the teaching of the Bible at Matriculation Schools and brought about the Hunter Commission which is in force even today, helping teachers all across India. He has also written: Guide to Sanskrit Composition, The Practical Sanskrit-English Dictionary, The Students' Hand-Book of Progressive Exercises, Part I and, II and Kusuma-mala.
