Summary of the Book During the political unrest in India which led to the formation of Bangladesh, Gustad Noble is a Parsi man living in Bombay with his family. A middle-class man, Gustad works as a clerk in a bank. He is troubled by financial instability and he struggles to provide his family what they need to survive. Despite having secured an admission into an IIT, his eldest son refuses to join the college, unable to see that it will change their family’s fortunes. When his youngest daughter falls sick, Gustad begins to doubt whether he can even stay sane any longer. However, a letter from an old friend arrives just in time to change everything. He then begins a journey during which he will learn much, and one of the things he learns might just be the answer to his troubles. About Rohinton Mistry Rohinton Mistry is an Indian-born Canadian novelist. He has also written A Fine Balance and Family Matters. He won the Governor General's Award, the Commonwealth Writers Prize for Best Book, and the SmithBooks/Books in Canada First Novel Award for this book. Such a Long Journey was adapted into a film in 1998, directed by Sturla Gunnarsson from a screenplay by Sooni Taraporevala.
