Teaching and Learning English Worldwide contains historical studies of the teaching of English in thirteen different countries where English is a mother tongue language or a significant second, or in some cases, a third language. The authors of the various chapters have concentrated on the place of English in a particular society and have attempted to describe how the teaching of English exists in the social and political context of that society and how it is shaped as a school subject and/or language of instruction in that context. The authors are all familiar with the recent history of English teaching in their respective countries, and who, in all cases, have themselves been significant contributors to that history. Being so, they write with a strongly held point-of-view about the significance of English as a school subject and its place in the social milieu. This volume was produced under the aegis of the International Federation for the Teaching of English.
