In principle, we give equal importance to the four basic skills – namely Listening, Speaking, Reading and Writing. The Indian context of ESL pedagogy hardly has any room for accommodating Oral Communication in the English language programmes at any of the levels of education. Also, there is a false sense of belief that listening and speaking skills will develop through reading and writing only. Apart from teaching, testing oral communication has always been a problem.In such a situation, Teaching of Oral Communication intends to expose the reasons for the gulf between theory and practice. For this purpose, it will review the existing scenario of the teaching of oral communication skills at an undergraduate level in Aligarh Muslim University.
