Thakurmar Jhuli is a Bengali book that comprises Bengali folk tales and fairy tales, written by Dakshinaranjan Mitra Majumder. The book was initially published in 1907 and since then it has become a hit especially among the Bengali children. The introduction to the compilation was written by none other than the Nobel laureate Rabindranath Tagore. The book has been so popular that some of its characters have gained a legendary status for the children, who are fond of this particular book. Lalkamal-Nilkamal and Byangoma-Byangomi are those two popular characters. The book is divided into four sections. After the initial introductory song, there are four books. These are Dudher Sagar (The Ocean of Milk), Roop Tarashi (Scary Beauty), Chang Bang (The Nest of the Animals), and Aam Sandesh (The Dessert). Thakurmar Jhuli, which literally means grandmother’s tales, is a famous book in Bengali literature and is a known name among the households of Bangladesh and West Bengal. Several editions of the book have been published till date, and it has been translated into English as well. Dakshinaranjan Mitra Majumdar, born on April 15 1877, is a celebrated Indian Bengali writer. He is known for writing Bengali fairy tales and children’s literature. He is a writer, editor, and collector of folk literature. He is popularly known for bringing out a compilation of Bengali folk tales and fairy tales. These are Thakurmar Jhuli, Thakurdadar Jhuli, Thandidir Tholay, and Dadamoshayer Thaolay.
