That Summer is a story about Haven and her longing to go back to the days when her life did not have the complications of her present. Summary of the Book Fifteen-year-old Haven has been having a very hard time accepting that her father is with another woman. This summer is going to be especially bad for her as her father is going to remarry. Also, her sister Ashley is busy planning her own wedding. Haven is the only one who seems to be hoping that the past could somehow come back so she and her family could live the way they used to and be happy. It seems that the past could have returned in some way when Ashley's ex, Sumner Lee, comes to town. Haven starts to wonder if this is a work of fate and whether Sumner is the key to turning her life around. About Sarah Dessen Sarah Dessen is an American writer who lives in North Carolina. She has graduated with the highest honors in Creative Writing. Her first book, That Summer, was published in 1996. Along for the Ride made it to the New York Times Best Sellers List.
