The 120 Days of Sodom by Marquis de Sade tells the tale of four affluent men who enslave 24 captives, most of whom were teenagers, and torture them sexually while they listened to the tales of ancient prostitutes. The manuscript for the book, which Sade wrote while he was detained in the Bastille, was destroyed when the Bastille was stormed. Sade described how the loss of the text caused him to "wept tears of blood." This is regarded by many as Sade's greatest accomplishment.
