The Alchemist is one of the best plays written by Ben Jonson. It is a comedy, which Samuel Taylor Coleridge regarded as one of the three most impeccable plots in English literature. Summary of the Book The Alchemist brings out the most complex nature and faces of human folly. Lovewit is a gentleman who has fled from London, as the city has seen an outbreak of plague. Jeremy is Lovewit’s butler who now has the responsibility of taking good care of the house, but starts using it as a place for deceitful acts. This characteristic comedy keeps you entertained throughout and still brings out the intricate details of how humans tend to submit to irrationality. About Ben Jonson Ben Jonson was a renowned English poet, literary critic, and a brilliant playwright. His flair for satire was best brought out in his plays like Evert Man in His Humour, Volpone, and Bartholomew Fayre: A Comedy. He is revered as the next greatest English dramatist, after Shakespeare. Jonson was an actor too. Some of his other famous works are The Poetaster, The Isle of Dogs, and A Tale of a Tub.
