A popular textbook by Paul Horowitz and Winfield Hill, The Art Of Electronics deals with analog and digital electronics Summary Of The Book Widely considered to be the only reference book for electronics geeks, the book’s emphasis is on the importance of design in electronics. The Art Of Electronics covers a range of subjects associated with a college-level course in electronics, like voltage and current, signals, transistors, active filters and oscillators, analog switching, and microprocessors. Through these discussions, the authors show how the efficient design of each component may be achieved. For example, in a chapter on feedback and operational amplifiers, they talk about the golden rules for its design through an extensive discussion of real operational amplifier properties. However, they also present the tradeoffs associated with good design. The authors’ practice of distinguishing good designs from the bad in each chapter is what has contributed to the book’s incredible success.  The Art Of Electronics is also considered invaluable in its treatment of important but neglected topics like the simplified design of high-frequency transistors and high-speed switching circuits, and discrete and integrated low-power analog circuits. With chapters on electronic construction techniques, microcomputers, digital electronics, and the intersection of digital and analog, the text intends to teach electronics to those with the aptitude and interest. Lacking a section for practice questions or exercises at the end of each chapter, the book is essentially a reference manual containing diagrams, equations, and tables. The authors’ informal tone and accessible language has helped make this book successful. Although intended for scientists and engineers, it is a vital resource for anyone who works with electronic circuits. For students, there is a complementary text, Student Manual For The Art Of Electronics by Thomas C. Hayes and Paul Horowitz, containing explanatory notes and laboratory exercises. About The Authors Born in the year 1942, Paul Horowitz is an American physicist and electrical engineer. He is known for his work in electronics design. He earned his B.A., M.A., and Ph.D. in physics from Harvard University, and is currently a professor of physics and electronics there. Horowitz’s research interests include x-ray and particle microscopy, astrophysics, and the search for extraterrestrial intelligence. He is the author of over 200 scientific articles and reports, including an article co-written with Carl Sagan, called Five Years of Project META: An All-Sky Narrow-Band Radio Search For Extraterrestrial Signals. Horowitz is currently involved in a project developing an acoustic system for landmine detection. Winfield Hill is an American physicist and electronics engineer. He is currently the Director of Electronic Engineering at the Rowland Institute for Science at Harvard University where he designs scientific instruments. Hill’s research interests include high-voltage RF and precision high-current electronics and has authored papers on the same. Formerly at Harvard University, he founded Sea Data Corporation as a spin-off from his years of research at Harvard. He has collaborated in numerous deep ocean experiments, designing specialised equipment as the chief officer of Sea Data Corp.
