This collection presents The Autobiography and Other Writings of Benjamin Franklin, the First American. Summary of the Book Born into a poor family, young Benjamin Franklin had little to himself except for his thirst for knowledge. He learnt to read at a young age, quickly absorbing every book he could lay his hands on. Deeply inquisitive, he constantly pondered about the things around him, wanting to understand how the universe worked. He ran away from home and journeyed to Philadelphia, where he would take on the roles of clerk, shopkeeper and eventually, bookkeeper. He began experimenting with physics, writing widely and gaining fame as a man of letters. He became associated with the men with whom he would one day draft the Declaration of Independence, becoming one of the Founding Fathers of the United States of America and through which he would become the First American. About Benjamin Franklin Benjamin Franklin was an American polymath, writer, scholar, printer, political theorist, politician, postmaster and inventor. He was also one of the Founding Fathers of the United States and is largely considered to be the “First American”. He is known for inventing the lightning rod, bifocals, the Franklin stove and for his role as a member of the Committee of Five that drafted the Declaration of Independence.
