The Awakening is a novel that tells the story of Edna Pontellier, who is twenty-eight years of age. The novel was so controversial that it was banned from being read for many years. It tells the tale of the protagonist’s life after she was abandoned by her family, and how her passions try to consume her through the course of events. In this story, Edna forsakes society and pursues her life in accordance with nature and her senses. The story is on the lines of the writings of Emily Dickinson. Today, this novel is widely read all over the world and is considered a literary masterpiece. The author of this book, Kate Chopin, was born on the 8th of February, 1850, in St. Louis, Missouri. In the initial years of the 1890’s, the author began writing for several publications. Some of the notable works of the author include The Story of an Hour, At the Cadian Ball, and Beauty of the Baby. The author passed on the 22nd of August 1904 as a result of brain haemorrhage. The author was considered one of the prime authors of her time, a decade after her demise.
