The Bad Beginning is the first novel in A Series of Unfortunate Events by Lemony Snicket which tells the melancholy tale of the Baudelaire children and their misfortunes. Summary of the Book Violet, Klaus, and Sunny Baudelaire have to be the unluckiest children alive. They are orphaned by an dangerous fire and must now go live with their distant cousin: the villainous and conniving Count Olaf. A professional stage actor, Olaf only wants to adopt the children under the belief that he will inherit their vast inheritance which has been set aside until Violet comes of age. He is soon disillusioned and schemes to get his hands on that inheritance. He will do anything, including forcing Violet to marry him just to get it. About Lemony Snicket Lemony Snicket is the pseudonym of the American novelist Daniel Handler, who is best known for A Series of Unfortunate Events set of novels for children. Lemony Snicket is also a character in the novels, and a former lover of Beatrice Baudelaire. He is constantly searching for the Baudelaire children.
