The Book of Disquiet, by Fernando Pessoa, is regarded as one of the greatest and strangest modernist texts. Summary of the Book An assembly of sometimes linked fragments, The Book of Disquiet is a hauntingly beautiful work, introduced by Pessoa as a “factless autobiography”. Several editions of this book have been published. This Penguin Modern Classics edition contains an introduction, notes on the text and translation, and acknowledgements. This is followed by a preface by Fernando Pessoa, sections called A Factless Autobiography and A Disquiet Anthology. About Fernando Pessoa Fernando António Nogueira Pessôa was a Portuguese poet, literary critic, philosopher, translator, publisher, and writer. He wrote in and translated from English and French as well. Regarded as one of the prominent literary figures, a prolific writer, Pessoa is also known for his works such as A Little Larger Than the Entire Universe, The Keeper of Sheep, Always Astonished, The Education of the Stoic, and Sheep’s Vigil.
