About J. C. Daniel Jivanayakam Cyril Daniel or J.C.Daniel was an enthusiast towards the natural world since he was a child. He was encouraged by his mother’s empathetic attitude towards nature along with his father’s scholarly attributes. He was mentored by Dr. Salim Ali whose guidance brought him into contact with Bombay Natural History Society. His other books include A Century of Natural History and Conservation in Developing Countries, The Book of Indian Reptiles (OUP), Indian Wildlife - Insight Guides Lion Section. The Book of Indian Birds by Salim Ali (12th Edition) was revised by him. It was brought out in the year 1996, on occasion of Salim Ali’s birth centenary. J.C. Daniel writes in simple, lucid language with enough details and pictures to untangle the complications of technical and scientific terminologies. Born on 9th July 1927, J.C. Daniel was an Indian naturalist. He served as a curator for Bombay Natural History Society from the year 1950 and was promoted to being its first Director. He didn’t lose his connections with the society even after his formal retirement. He served the role of Honorary Secretary and Member. Apart from this, he was the initiator of the Hornbill Magazine and the Executive Editor of the Society’s journal. J. C.Daniel breathed his last on 23rd August, 2011 post being diagnosed with cancer.
