In Fyodor Dostoevsky’s The Brothers Karamazov, three brothers are forced to deal with the repercussions of their father’s untimely death and the fact that it may have been a patricide. Summary of the Book No one likes Fyodor Karamazov, not his neighbours or his own family. His three sons, fathered through two marriages, don’t particularly care for him. The sensualist, wine and women-loving Dmitri doesn’t come home much unless it’s to talk about his inheritance. The rationalist, Ivan, is constantly pondering away the hours by thinking about how the world rankles from the weight of all the injustice. Alyosha, the kind and caring monk, is universally loved, called Alyosha by all. However, when the old man dies, suspicion falls on his sons. Which of the three sons hated Fyodor Karamazov enough to kill him? In Dostoevsky’s last and most famous novel, he debates the existence of God, the justification of patricide and the meaning of free will and morality.
