The novel begins with Paaker's return to Thebes after several years of studying in Heliopolis. He is eager to begin his career as a scribe, but he finds that the city has changed in his absence. Akhenaten has abandoned the traditional Egyptian religion and established a new monotheistic cult dedicated to the sun god Aten. Paaker is initially skeptical of the new religion, but he is eventually won over by Akhenaten's charismatic personality.Paaker soon finds himself drawn into the political intrigues surrounding the pharaoh. He is befriended by Horemheb, a young general who is secretly opposed to Akhenaten's rule. Horemheb introduces Paaker to a group of conspirators who are plotting to overthrow the pharaoh and restore the old religion.Paaker is initially reluctant to get involved in the conspiracy, but he eventually agrees to help.
