Set in the Yukon during the Klondike Gold Rush, The Call of the Wild is an adventure novel which tells the story of an Alaskan sled dog as he struggles against his natural instincts. Summary of the Book Buck, a domesticated St. Bernard-Scotch Collie, is stolen from his home on a ranch and sold as an Alaskan sled dog. Forced to fight for domination with huskies, Buck begins to return to his primal instincts. The conflict between the dogs turns deadly as Buck fights the previous leader of the pack for domination, and the dog is killed by the rest of the pack. Buck hardens over the period of the novel, his primal instincts slowly begin to reign supreme over him. When a kinder master takes Buck in, he begins to soften, but his inner instincts are still as canine as ever, and when the wild calls, he must decide whether to answer or to stay back in the world of man. About Jack London John Griffith "Jack" London was an American writer, journalist and social activist who pioneered the world of commercial magazine fiction and was one of the first celebrated writers to earn a living through his writing. Born John Griffith Chaney, he is best remembered for White Fang, The Sea Wolf, To Build a Fire, An Odyssey of the North, and Love of Life. London took part in the Klondike Gold Rush, building much of his experience in sailing which went on to form the basis for his writing. This novel was adapted into two Hollywood films and one TV film.
