The Canterbury Tales is a collection of stories by Geoffrey Chaucer. Summary of the Book A group of pilgrims travel together from Southwark to the shrine of Saint Thomas Becket at Canterbury Cathedral. On the way, they decide to hold a little competition among themselves, the prize for which would be a free meal at the Tabard Inn at Southwark upon return. The competition would be for each of them to tell a story. Among the pilgrims are a knight, a miller, a reeve, a cook, a man of law, a wife of Bath, a friar, a summoner, a clerk, a merchant and several others. This collection includes the complete manuscript, using some of the most reliable sources. However, popular opinion dictates that Chaucer never completed his work. About Geoffrey Chaucer Geoffrey Chaucer was an English writer, known as the Father of English Literature. He has also written Troilus and Criseyde, The Book of the Duchess, the House of Fame, and the Legend of Good Women. Media Note A fictional version of Chaucer was portrayed by Paul Bettany in A Knight’s Tale, a very loose adaptation of an episode of the Canterbury Tales starring Heath Ledger.
