The subject of motion of material bodies formed the work of some of the earliest scientists and philosophers in the field of physical science. Their efforts culminated into the development of a vast field of physics known as ‘dynamics’ or simply ‘mechanics’. Today, the term ‘classical mechanics’ is used to describe this branch of Physics. Issac Newton, in his monumental ‘Philosophiae Naturalis Principia’, established ‘particle dynamics’ as a scientific and physical discipline to explain all natural phenomena in terms of a completely mechanistic theory. He introduced the notations of ‘force’ and ‘mass’ and enunciated the laws of motion. These laws were extended to the domain or rigid body dynamics by Euler, D’Alambert and Lagrange.
