The Conservationist is a novel written by the Nobel Prize-winning South African writer, Nadine Gordimer. It was a joint winner of the Booker-McConnell Prize for fiction. Summary of the Book Mehring is a rich South African. His been wife, son, colleagues and lovers have lost all the interest in the man’s conservative/capitalist ways. He buys a farm in the outskirts of the city out of an impulse, although he knows almost nothing about farming. Things get worse when an unidentified body of a dead man is found in his farm. Even the police show no interest in the case as the dead man is black, and he is buried on the same spot where the body was found. The whole episode continues to haunt Mehring. One day, a flood brings the black man’s body to the surface. And though the farm workers do not know him, they arrange for a proper burial as if the man was a family member.
