About George Durrell George Durrell was an Indian-born British author and zoologist, whose best known work is The Corfu Trilogy. He worked extensively on promoting wildlife preservation. Durrell’s books helped in highlighting various ecological issues. His published works include My Family And Other Animals, Encounters With Animals, The Drunken Forest, The Whispering Land, A Zoo In My Luggage, The Amateur Naturalist, Menagerie Manor, The Aye-Aye And I, and The Bafut Beagles. His aim in life was always to preserve wildlife. Durrell even worked on various television programs in order to increase ecological awareness among children and adults. Thanks to his efforts, creatures like the Rodrigues fruit bat and the Mauritius pink pigeon have been saved from extinction. Durrell’s expeditions to collect animals led him to various international locations including Madagascar, Mexico, Sierra Leone, India, Mauritius, Argentina, and Paraguay. In 1982, he was honoured with the OBE. Durrell also established two organizations, the Jersey Wildlife Preservation Trust and the Jersey Zoological Park. He died in 1995 and was commemorated by Charles Secrett of the Friends of the Earth.
