The Count Of Monte Cristo is an adventure novel by the French author Alexandre Dumas and details the occurrences in the life of Edmond Dantes. Summary Of The Book The Count Of Monte Cristo revolves around a catastrophe of events that derail the life of Edmond Dantes, a merchant sailor. The story starts from when Dantes accepts the captainship of his vessel from Leclere. When he is returning to Marseille to marry his fiancé Mercedes, Leclere entrusts him with two responsibilities. One is to deliver a package to Marshall Bertrand who is on exile at Elba, and another is to hand over a letter to a man. A day before the wedding, Dantes’ scheming colleague Danglars provokes Mercedes’ cousin Fernand to file a complaint against Dantes’ for being a Bonapartist traitor. Dantes’ neighbour, Caderousse, who comes to know of the conspiracy while drunk doesn’t disclose the truth the next day. Dantes is arrested and convicted. Villefort, the deputy crown prosecutor unearths the letter from Dantes, which was sent to Villefort's father, a Bonapartist. But without further investigation and trial, Villefort sentences Dantes to life. Dantes spends six tortuous and lonely years in prison. When he is on the verge of committing suicide, he makes friends with Faria, a fellow prisoner. In the next eight years, they get to know each other well. Faria teaches Dantes language, science and culture. He also explains how Danglars, Fernand and Villefort had co-conspired the events which led to and ensured his imprisonment. Faria also reveals a place of treasure on the island, Monte Cristo. When Faria dies, Dantes disposes Faria’s body and hides in the sack. The guards throw the sack into the sea. Dantes escapes and is rescued by a ship. The ship is full of smugglers. Dantes fakes injury and gets down at Monte Cristo. A changed man, and now wealthy as well due to the treasure, Dantes is all set to return to Marseille. What will he do then? Will he avenge himself for the wrong he has suffered at the hands of his three enemies? What will he do with the newfound treasure?
