The Discourses is a work of philosophy and political history set in 16th century Rome before the advent of the great emperors. Summary In this deeply insightful and informative book, Machiavelli very subtly disagrees with the work of the Roman historian Titus Livius (Livy) and examines the actual working of the Roman republic. He applies these lessons to his own era and to the life of nations in general. In the book, Machiavelli proposes an idea of a government that will instill the virtues of active citizenship in the people of the nation, which would encourage the citizen’s to put the needs of the nation before their selfish interests. His ideologies are very clear and realistic.
