The Discovery of India by Jawaharlal Nehru is an attempt by the Late Indian Prime Minister to showcase the Indian history from the times of the Indus Civilization to the days of Indian struggle for Independence. Through the book, Nehru makes an attempt to uphold the self-governance that has been enjoyed by India since the prehistoric days. Written over a period of 5 months during his stay at the Ahmed Nagar Jail in 1944, the book shows the metamorphosis from the early days of civilization and the role played by all the invaders, from the Aryans led by Alexander to the East India Company, in shaping India’s political landscape. The book also highlights the changes India had to undergo in religious and cultural spheres and become a nation of multi-diversity and multiple religions, owing to the impact each new invader had on the country’s populace. Jawaharlal Nehru was born on November 14, 1889 in Allahabad, Uttar Pradesh.  He has written books like the Glimpses Of World History and Letters From A Father To His Daughter. He earned a degree in natural science from the Trinity College, Cambridge. He also studied at the Inns of Court School of Law in London to qualify as a barrister. Nehru returned to India and played a vital role in India’s struggle for Independence along with Mahatma Gandhi and became the first Prime Minister of Free India. He died on May 27, 1964.
