The Dog is a novel by Joseph O’Neill. Summary of the Book A man tries to clear his head after a messy breakup with his longterm girlfriend by leaving New York for a distant pasture: Dubai. Here, in this strange concrete megalopolis which seeks to become the new mystic resort of the East, he takes on a job as the family officer of a wealthy family. He begins to feel that he has become the family dog, and in the house, no matter what he does, he cannot shrug off the feeling that he is constantly trapped. This is a moral exploration into the human psyche and a novel which boasts O’Neill’s eloquence, empathy and prowess for storytelling. About Joseph O’Neill Joseph O’Neill is an Irish writer. He is known for Netherland, The Breezes and This Is the Life. O’Neill won the 2009 PEN/Faulkner Award for Fiction, and he was longlisted for the Warwick Prize for Writing for Netherland.
