About Zubaan Books: An Imprint of Kali for Women Zubaan is a non-profit publishing house which grew out of India’s first feminist publishing house, Kali for Women. It was founded by Urvashi Butalia, who was the co-founder of Kali for Women. The idea was to continue the work of Kali. The publishing house has received much of the backlist of Kali so that the imprints of all of the backlist is done. Zubaan comes from a Hindustani word which literally means ‘Tongue’. Other meanings for the word are: voice, speech, language and dialect.
