The novel follows the adventures of an aging nobleman named Alonso Quixano, who becomes so enamored with chivalric romances that he decides to become a knight-errant, adopting the name Don Quixote de la Mancha. Don Quixote sets out to revive chivalry and protect the helpless, accompanied by his loyal squire, Sancho Panza, a simple farmer who is promised an island to govern.
