When the Earth is demolished to make way for an intergalactic highway, the only survivor finds himself travelling across the universe. The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy is the first book in the hilarious science fiction series by Douglas Adams. Summary of the Book Arthur Dent is a simple man. He only hopes for his monotonous life, boring routine and to live on in his home on the ground. However, the government decides to demolish his home to pave way for a superfast highway. His friend, Ford Prefect, pulls him away as he tries to fight the demolition crew. Ford explains that there’s no time to worry about his house. An intergalactic demolition crew is headed toward Earth, to destroy it to make way for another highway, one set in space. Ford reveals that he’s an alien, and that he’s about to escape the Earth. He invites Arthur to join him. All he’s going to need is a towel. But he mustn’t panic, because that’s the first rule of hitchhiking across the galaxy.
