The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy is a science-fiction novel by Douglas Adams. Summary of the Book Highways are constructed every day for the sake of progress. It’s business, and certainly an improvement. People lose houses though, so it’s very tragic too. So when Arthur Dent is about to lose his house to a highway construction program, he’s not a happy man. He refuses to move out of the way and let the bulldozers destroy his home. What he doesn’t realize is the irony of another road widening program. His best friend, Ford Prefect, arrives on the scene and drags Arthur away. He tells him that there is an alien race called the Vogons who are going to destroy the Earth to set up an inter-galactic highway. This isn’t a secret, because the Dolphins have known it all along. Arthur goes with Ford and steals aboard a Vogon ship. When they are discovered, they’re put to the ultimate torture. They need to listen to Vogon poetry. Their journey through space brings them to several extraordinary beings, including Marvin the paranoid android, and Deep Thought, the smartest computer in the universe. They discover that life, the universe and everything in it has one answer: 42. The only problem is that no one knows the question. All one needs to remember while hitchhiking in the universe is this cautionary note: don’t panic, and carry a towel. About Douglas Adams Douglas Adams was an English writer and dramatist.
