A young Hobbit joins a group of superstitious Dwarves who choose him as their comrade in a burglary of Draconian proportions. The Hobbit is the classic fantasy novel by J. R. R. Tolkien. Summary of the Book Long ago, the Dwarves of Erebor were forced out of their home in the Lonely Mountain by Smaug the Malevolent, a Dragon of yore. In losing their home, the Dwarves lost their caverns filled with gold and the sacred Arkenstone, the birthright of their King. Now, years after the ousting, a group of thirteen Dwarves decides to return to the Lonely Mountain, to find their long forgotten gold. They seek the assistance of the Wizard, Gandalf the Grey, and he feeds their superstitions for the number thirteen by proposing that they take with them a fourteenth member. He tells them that he cannot get directly involved, but that he knows just the man for the job. Not a man exactly of course, but a Hobbit, one that lives in his comfortable hole in the ground with good food, good pipe weed and all the luxuries of life. However, what chance does a cowardly Hobbit have against the fire-breathing Smaug? About J. R. R.
