About Chinmayananda Saraswati Swami Chinmayananda, born Balakrishnan Menon in 1916, was an Indian spiritual leader who was a disciple of Sivananda Saraswati. He has also authored My Trek Through Uttarakhand, Discourses on Isavasya Upanishad, Meditation & Life, Discourses on the Kathopanishad and Vakya Vritti of Adi Sankara. After growing up in an orthodox aristocratic family in Kerala, he studied science and liberal arts, eventually graduating from Madras University in 1939. Thereafter, he studied English Literature and Law at Lucknow University. He was actively involved in the Indian Independence movement, and was imprisoned for being an agitator. The Chinmaya Mission was founded in honor of Chinmayananda Saraswati by his devotees in 1953, and has over 300 mission centres all over the world. He died in 1993 in San Diego, of a heart attack at the age of 77.
