The Host is a science fiction romance by best-selling author Stephenie Meyer. Summary of the Book When the Earth is invaded by a species of parasitic aliens called Souls, one particular Soul named Wanderer is implanted in the body of Melanie Stryder, one of the last surviving humans on the planet. Melanie, the Souls presume, must know the location of the last survivors and they will do anything to get her to divulge that secret. However, the suicidal Melanie has so far resisted the Souls, her consciousness is by far one of the most resilient ones the Souls have encountered. Wanderer slowly begins to communicate with Melanie, and she discovers that she has a younger brother called Jamie and a boyfriend called Jared Howe. Instead of searching for them, however, Wanderer begins to love them just as much as Melanie herself does, and she considers leaving her body for another more suitable host. Melanie decides to travel through a desert to find the location of her uncle Jeb, but in the journey, Wanderer grows closer to her. Their friendship might yet be the one thing that can save the Earth and the humans. If the other Souls don't get to them first, that is. Melanie meets with the other survivors and they begin to doubt Melanie, that perhaps she is under the full control of the Soul. Melanie herself struggles with her existence. Wanderer, or Wanda as she soon begins to call herself, is something Melanie hasn't encountered before: an alien parasite who could perhaps become her closest friend. But is this altruistic, nonviolent and utterly truthful Soul really what she appears to be?
