Amitav Ghosh's acclaimed novel, The Hungry Tide is a fine blend of myth, politics and ethnography. It traces the trajectory of Bengali Hindu refugees in the subcontinent in the aftermath of the Bangladesh War in 1971. Ghosh dramatises the last phase of the refugees' struggle in the Sundarbans with the novel intertwining it with the history of riverine dolphins, which are an integral part of the archipelago's history and ecology. Shakti Batra has been Vice-principal, Dyal Singh College (University of Delhi), has also taught at the Kabul University and the University of Kyrgyzstan, Bishkek.
