The Hunt For Red October by thriller writer Tom Clancy revolves around the characters of Marko Aleksandrovich Ramius, captain of a Soviet submarine, and Jack Ryan, a CIA analyst. The 1975 incident of Valery Sablin’s failed mutiny aboard the Storozhevoy served as the inspiration behind the book. Summary Of The Book Marko Aleksandro Ramius is a submarine commander and a part of the Soviet Navy. He aims to defect to the United States along with his officers on board Red October, an experimental nuclear submarine. The reasons for his defection lie in his frustration regarding the Soviet rule, as well as the death of his wife because of an incompetent doctor, who escaped because of his close ties to the Politburo. What makes the Red October even more sensitive is its ability to avoid sonar detection thanks to a stealth propulsion mechanism. The plans of Ramius’ defection come under threat as the Soviet Northern Fleet goes after the nuclear submarine, under the guise of a search and rescue operation. Top-level CIA analyst Jack Ryan gets wind of Ramius’ plans, and finds a way to detect Red October even with its stealth drive engaged. Various circumstances eventually play their parts in giving Ryan the responsibility of guiding Ramius and the submarine away from the threat of the pursuing Soviet fleet. The book served as writer Tom Clancy’s launchpad as a thriller writer, with President Ronald Reagan himself praising the author and his work. In 1990, The Hunt For Red October was adapted into a commercially successful movie directed by John McTiernan. Multiple video games based on the story were released as well.
