About The Author: Sir George Christopher Molesworth Birdwood (1832–1917) was an Anglo-Indian official, naturalist, and writer. Born in Belgaum, Bombay Presidency, he received his education at Plymouth Grammar School and Edinburgh University, earning an MD degree with a thesis on "The origin of ideas." He joined the Bombay Medical Service in 1854, served in the Persian War, and held various roles in Bombay, including professor at Grant Medical College, curator of the museum, and secretary of the Asiatic and Horticultural societies. Birdwood contributed to municipal life in Bombay and later worked at the India Office. He was dedicated to preserving Indian culture and maintained friendships with Indian royalty and scholars. He received several honors, including Knight Commander of the Order of the Indian Empire and the Légion d'Honneur. Birdwood was also a prolific author, writing on topics like economic vegetable products, the genus Boswellia (Frankincense Trees), and the industrial arts of India. He passed away in Ealing in 1917.
