Kabul Beauty School is a record of the experiences of the author, Deborah Rodriguez, in Kabul. She has shared the stories of many Afghan women who would come to her beauty school and tell her about their lives and marriages. Summary of the Book Deborah decided to go to war-torn Afghanistan with intentions of offering humanitarian support to the people there. At first, she was worried if her profession seemed irrelevant as compared to that of the rest of the group that went with her. She was a hairdresser and wasn’t sure how her skills would come to use. However, she soon had her own beauty school and many Afghani women came for her class. They came in to learn the basics of coloring techniques, haircutting and makeup. As time went, the women would talk to Debbie about their lives and marriages. The stories reveal to the readers the oppressed lives that these women lead and the treatment meted out to them by their husbands. The author learned from the Afghani women and their marriages. Deborah speaks of how she left her marriage and learnt to love again. She has an arranged marriage with an Afghani man and has spoken about this relationship in the book.
