This is the story of one of the first attempt to climb the great Himalayan peak, Kangchenjunga. Known to the local people as “ The five treasures of snow”. Kangchenjunga which rises to 28,208 ft. is the third highest mountain in the world. Seen from afar it seems to float serenely above the clouds. To reach the summit means a death-defying battle against the elements, biting cold winds, barrages of snow and, worst of all, terrifying avalanches that sweep constantly across entire faces of the mountain. Francis Sydney Smythe mobilized this expedition which marched through trophical Sikkim into “ Unknown Nepal” by way of Kang La, a 16000 ft. pass and then set up a base camp.
