Stephen’s take on romance in India changed after he met Rosa. He met her when he had come down during the winter. Before he left, Rosa asked him to promise that he will be back for her.  Summary of the Book A day after he arrived in India, Stephen met the charming Rosa Lemarchant. She lived with her family in an old and rundown mansion in Calcutta. She was a lot like most of the Eurasian girls Stephen had heard about and appeared to be shy. Stephen takes a special interest in both Rosa and the building in which she lives. Will Stephen come back for Rosa after he leaves, or will she be exploited by the British man?
