Fluent in Sanskrit and Bengali, Adam collaborated with reformer Ram Mohan Roy on translating the New Testament. However, theological doubts led him to leave the Baptist mission. He co-founded the Calcutta Unitarian Society, which eventually merged into the Brahmo Samaj movement. In 1830, Adam was appointed by the British colonial government to conduct a pioneering survey of native education in Bengal.
