About the Book;-Very few biographies of Kant exist. The Neo-Kantian movement renewed interest in his life. During the last half of the 19th century, John Henry Wilbrandt Stuckenberg provided an eminently readable biography of Kant. Kant is known chiefly as the author of the “Kritik of pure Reason.” In giving an account of his life however, a much more comprehensive view of him must be, taken; he must be considered in the various relations he sustained. As his works culminated in ethics and theology and were intended to establish these on a firm basis his moral and religious views deserve more attention than they generally receive from English writers on his philosophy, especially since they are so intimately connected with his life. A critical discussion of his abstruse philosophy would be out of place in a biography. About the Author:- J. H. W. Stuckenberg was born in 1835 near the old German city of Osnaoruck. The family came to the united states in 1839, first to Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania and later to Cincinnati and to Indiana. Stuckenberg received his preliminary training at Wittenberg College and later continued his studies in Germany where he want for the first time in 1857. He studied first at Halle. He returned to the united states at the opening of the civil war and went first to Erie, Pennsylvania. He was commissioned a major in the Federal Army and served as Chaplain with the 145th Pennsylvania Volunteers. After the war he returned to Germany where he continued his studies at Gottingen, Tubingen and Berlin. He returned to the united states and in 1873 came to Vittenborg college as professor of theology where he remained until 1880. In that year he returned to Berlin again for a prolonged stay, until 1894.
