About The Book : It is not possible to enumerate here the many valuable papers in geographical and other journals to which the writers are largely indebted, nor to the many important books of travel by which our knowledge has been so vastly increased of late years. The works of Lieutenant Peary, Dr. Sven Hedin, Dr. Gregory, Sir Harry Johnston, Stanley, Nansen, Younghusband, and others, have been of the greatest service to ethnologists, and the writers have freely drawn upon the latest and fullest sources of information. With a view to simplicity, and the avoidance of the difficult problems of race-relationship, the various peoples described are treated from a geographical standpoint. To a large extent the geographical arrangement agrees with the purely ethnographical classification. Nearly all races, however, are mixed, there being few pure types anywhere. All the ingenious schemes of classification as yet put forward by ethnologists are provisional and temporary ; but it is convenient to retain the use of such familiar terms as Caucasian, Mongolian, Polynesian, Negro, Negrito, and Papuan. About The Author : Henry Neville Hutchinson FGS, FRGS, FZS (1856 – 1927) was an Anglican clergyman and, during the 1890s, a leading writer of popular books on geology, palaeontology, evolution and anthropology. In 1884 he was curate to St Saviour's, Redland Park, Bristol. In 1886–1887 he was private tutor to the sons of the Earl of Morley. In 1891 he began literary work in London. He was an amateur naturalist and photographer, whose collection of photographs was exhibited at The Anthropological Institute of Great Britain and Ireland where he encouraged members to collect quality photographs for ethnological purposes. John Walter Gregory, FRS,FRSE, FGS (1864 – 1932) was a British geologist and explorer, known principally for his work on glacial geology and on the geography and geology of Australia and East Africa. Richard Lydekker (1849 – 1915) was an English naturalist, geologist and writer. He was educated at Trinity College, Cambridge, where he took a first-class in the Natural Science tripos (1872). In 1874 he joined the Geological Survey of India and made studies of the vertebrate palaeontology of northern India (especially Kashmir). He remained in this post until the death of his father in 1881. His main work in India was on the Siwalik palaeofauna; it was published in Palaeontologia Indica. He was responsible for the cataloguing of the fossil mammals, reptiles, and birds in the Natural History Museum (10 vols., 1891) The Title 'The Living Races Of Mankind: A Popular Illustrated Account of the Customs, Habits, Pursuits, Feats and Ceremonies of the Races of Mankind Throughout the World written/authored/edited by H.
