The Lonely Tiger, authored by Hugh Allen, is one of the best books written on hunting, living in a remote village, farming and the retired life of a man from the British Armed Forces. Summary of the Book Hugh Allen decided to live in India and chose an estate in Mandhikera, a remote village in the central part of the country. He had previously served in the British Armed Forces at the end of the Second World War. He started farming in a piece of land, but had to face many issues from the native villagers, and also leopards, bears, monkeys and tigers and other wild animals. This book chronicles his encounters with these wild and beautiful creatures, and how the adventures enriched his retired life. His narration is filled with thrilling events that occur in the forests and thumps with energy. It also pours light on issues like the fast receding number of tigers and poignantly explains the reality and what measures could be taken to preserve the exotic wild life. The author also describes how he fell in love with a country as diverse as India. About Hugh Allen Hugh Allen was wounded with a bad head injury while he was serving in the British Armed Forces towards the end of the Second World War. He was then hospitalized in India, after which he was fascinated by the nation and its people, its rich and exotic natural resources and wild life. He decided stay back in India and started farming in an obscure village, far from civilization. The Lonely Tiger is a must read, which is pretty much his own story that revolves around various situations in India.
