The Lost Girl was published in 1920. It won the James Tait Black Memorial Prize that year. Alvina Houghton, daughter of a widowed Midlands draper, is coming of age as her father's business is failing. James Houghton found himself in a desperate situation to try and save his daughter’s future. He bought a theatre to resurrect his fortunes. In his troupe of traveling performers, Ciccio is always Alvina's favorite. With his sensual charm and confident demeanor, she can't help but be attracted to him.
