The novel describes an expedition to the Amazon basin, led by Professor George Edward Challenger, a British scientist. Challenger and his three companions are mobbed by a cluster of flying pterodactyls and pursued by flesh-eating dinosaurs. It is said that Michael Crichton, the author of Jurassic Park was inspired by this novel. In "The Land of Mist" , Challenger becomes a Spiritualist and the novel promotes the concept of Spiritualism.
