Born in Nairobi, Kenya, he became an atheist in his early teens after reading about the theory of evolution. He studied biology in Oxford University. He worked as an assistant professor of zoology in the University of California, Berkeley, before shifting back to Oxford, where he was appointed as the Simonyi Professor of the Public Understanding of Science. He is the author of several books and has also been involved in making many documentaries. He also set up the Richard Dawkins Foundation for Reason and Science.
