The Magicians' Guild is the first instalment in The Black Magician series of fantasy books by Trudi Canavan. Summary of the Book In an annual event, the poor underclassmen of the city of Imardin are cast out by the magicians. The defenseless people are called the “dwells” and they have none of the magicians’ power. Yet they resist, throwing rocks at the magicians who push them out with their sorcery. The magicians have nothing to fear, for they believe the dwells are powerless. However, one young girl throws a rock at Lord Fergun, piercing through the shield. The rock strikes Lord Fergun, but more than the pain, it is the shock that unnerves him. The magicians’ guild is rocked by the discovery. Their worst nightmare has come to pass: someone among the dwells can use magic. In fact, if she is trained well, the young girl could become more powerful than anyone in the guild. And that is the very reason why they must find her. If they can’t find her, and if she goes untrained, then her power will destroy the entire city.
